Lesson 11 of 15

Filing your VAT return in e-MTA

Last updated 2026-10-312 min read

The VAT return is filed in e-MTA, the online service of the Tax and Customs Board (EMTA). Sapita prepares the files, and you upload them and submit the return yourself. This lesson walks through the steps in order, so the figures in e-MTA match the figures in Sapita.

Before you start

  • Lock the period in Sapita. A locked period cannot change, so the figures you file stay the same.
  • Check that every bank line for the period is matched, and that every invoice for the period is in the books.
  • Have your e-MTA login ready. Only you can sign in to e-MTA for the company.

Steps

  1. In Sapita, open the VAT return for the period and review the lines.
  2. Export the KMD file and the KMD INF file. They are XML files.
  3. In e-MTA, open the KMD form for the period and upload the KMD file.
  4. Upload the KMD INF file in the matching annex.
  5. Compare each line in e-MTA with the figures in Sapita. If a line differs, stop and find out why before you submit.
  6. Submit the return, and keep the confirmation that e-MTA shows.
  7. Mark the return as filed in Sapita. The confirmation belongs with the period's records.

If something is wrong after you submit

A return that has been submitted is corrected by a corrected return in e-MTA, not by editing the old one. Sapita helps you see which lines changed, so the correction matches the books.

Keep the records

Keep the confirmation, the exported files and the period lock together. An auditor or an accountant will ask for them, and they show what was filed and when.
