Period lock
Definition
A period lock stops changes to the entries of a closed period, such as a month or a year. Locking keeps the filed figures the same as the books. A correction after a lock is posted in an open period, with a reversal.
Example. After the VAT return for September is filed, the September period is locked. A missing €80 invoice is then posted in October with a note.
Why it matters for your company
Once a VAT return is filed, its figures must not change quietly. A lock makes any later correction a visible reversal, which is what a filed return needs.
