Payment reference

Definition

A payment reference is the text or number a customer puts on a payment so that it can be matched to an invoice. A clear reference, such as the invoice number, lets the bank line be matched without guessing.

Example. A customer who pays €992 with the reference "2026-004" lets you match the payment to invoice 2026-004 at once.

Why it matters for your company

A clear reference lets bank import match the payment without manual work. Putting the invoice number on the invoice is the simplest way to get one.

Where you see it in Sapita

On the sales invoice, next to the payment details, and on the bank line matching screen.
