Credit note

Definition

A credit note is a document that cancels all or part of an earlier sales invoice. It has its own number and it refers to the invoice it changes. An issued invoice is not edited; a credit note is how a mistake is corrected.

Example. A customer returns goods on an invoice for €400 plus €96 VAT. A credit note for €496 cancels the invoice in full.

Why it matters for your company

A sent invoice is not deleted from the books. A credit note is the proper way to correct a price, a quantity or a wrong customer, and it changes your VAT for the period.
