Trial balance
Definition
A trial balance lists the balance of every account on one date, with the debit balances in one column and the credit balances in the other. The two totals must be equal. It is the usual check before a period is closed.
Example. If the debit total is €12,400 and the credit total is €12,400, the books pass the check. If they differ by €50, an entry is missing or has the wrong amount.
Why it matters for your company
The trial balance is the quickest check that the books balance before you close a period. A difference tells you something is missing.
