Asset

Definition

An asset is something the company owns or controls that has value and will bring benefit later. Cash, money owed by customers and equipment are typical assets.

Example. A bank balance of €3,000 and a laptop worth €1,200 are assets of €4,200 in total.

Why it matters for your company

Assets sit on the balance sheet. Knowing what counts as an asset tells you what to record as a purchase to keep, and what to treat as a cost of the year.
